Free Crochet Pattern for a Diamonds Line Dishcloth
Materials Needed
- Yarn: Approximately 850–950 yards of worsted weight (#4 Medium) cotton or cotton-blend yarn. For a softer drape, a cotton-acrylic blend may be used. Shown in 3 colors (Color A: 350 yds, Color B: 300 yds, Color C: 300 yds).
- Crochet Hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Notions: Yarn needle for weaving in ends, scissors, stitch markers (optional), blocking pins and mat.
Gauge
4 inches (10 cm) = 16 single crochet stitches and 18 rows in single crochet, worked flat. Gauge is critical for achieving the stated finished size. Adjust hook size if necessary.
Finished Size
Approximately 48 inches (122 cm) wide x 60 inches (152 cm) long, after blocking.

Pattern Instructions
Notes
This blanket is worked in one piece from the bottom up. The pattern features a textured, reversible stitch pattern that looks like interlocking diamonds. You will change colors every 4 rows to create horizontal stripes. The edges are finished with a clean, single-crochet border. The pattern is written for 3 colors, but you can use one color or many. Carry unused yarn loosely up the side when changing colors every 4 rows to avoid weaving in many ends. Cut yarn only when changing to a color not used again for a long stretch.
Foundation Chain
With Color A, ch 193 (or any multiple of 6 + 1). This chain should measure approximately 48 inches when slightly stretched. If you need a different width, chain any multiple of 6 + 1.
Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn. (192 sc)
Row 2 (WS): Ch 1 (does not count as st here and throughout), sc in first st, *ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in last st. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc; rep from * across, working last sc in last sc. Turn. (192 sc)
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in BLO of first st, sc in BLO of each st across. Turn. (192 sc)
Fasten off Color A. Attach Color B.
Stripe Pattern (Repeat for entire blanket)
Work Rows 5–8 with Color B, then Rows 9–12 with Color C, then Rows 13–16 with Color A. Repeat this 12-row stripe sequence (4 rows of each color) until the blanket measures approximately 58 inches from the foundation chain, ending after a Row 4 or Row 8 or Row 12 (i.e., after a solid BLO row). The exact number of stripes will depend on your row gauge. The pattern below describes one 12-row repeat in detail.
Rows 5–8 (Color B):
Row 5 (RS): Ch 1, sc in BLO of first st, *ch 1, sk next st, sc in BLO of next st; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in BLO of last st. Turn.
Row 6 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first sc, *sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc; rep from * across, ending with last sc in last sc. Turn. (192 sc)
Row 7: Ch 1, sc in FLO of first st, *ch 1, sk next st, sc in FLO of next st; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in FLO of last st. Turn.
Row 8: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc; rep from * across. Turn. Fasten off Color B. Attach Color C.
Rows 9–12 (Color C):
Row 9 (RS): Ch 1, sc in BLO of first st, *ch 1, sk next st, sc in BLO of next st; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in BLO of last st. Turn.
Row 10 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first sc, *sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc; rep from * across. Turn.
Row 11: Ch 1, sc in FLO of first st, *ch 1, sk next st, sc in FLO of next st; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in FLO of last st. Turn.
Row 12: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc; rep from * across. Turn. Fasten off Color C. Attach Color A.
Rows 13–16 (Color A):
Row 13 (RS): Ch 1, sc in BLO of first st, *ch 1, sk next st, sc in BLO of next st; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in BLO of last st. Turn.
Row 14 (WS): Ch 1, sc in first sc, *sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc; rep from * across. Turn.
Row 15: Ch 1, sc in FLO of first st, *ch 1, sk next st, sc in FLO of next st; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in FLO of last st. Turn.
Row 16: Ch 1, sc in first sc, *sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc; rep from * across. Turn. Fasten off Color A. Attach Color B.
Continue repeating the 12-row stripe pattern (Rows 5–16) until the blanket measures approximately 58 inches from the bottom edge. End after a Row 4, Row 8, or Row 12 (a solid BLO row).
Final Rows (Top Edge)
Work the following rows in the current color to create a finished top edge that matches the bottom:
Next Row (RS): Ch 1, sc in BLO of first st, *ch 1, sk next st, sc in BLO of next st; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, sc in BLO of last st. Turn.
Next Row (WS): Ch 1, sc in first sc, *sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next sc; rep from * across. Turn.
Next Row (RS): Ch 1, sc in BLO of first st, sc in BLO of each st across. Turn. (192 sc)
Fasten off. Weave in all ends.
Finishing
Border
With Color A (or any color you prefer), join yarn with a sl st in any corner of the blanket, working through both loops of the edge stitches.
Round 1 (RS): Ch 1, work 3 sc in the same corner st. *Work sc evenly across the edge to the next corner, working 1 sc per sc row-end or 2 sc per dc/chain row-end, and 1 sc per foundation chain st on the bottom. At the next corner, work 3 sc in the corner st. Rep from * around. When you return to the starting corner, work 2 more sc in the first corner (you already have 1 sc there + 2 = 3 sc total), then sl st to the first sc. Do not turn.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, *sc in each sc around, working 3 sc in the center sc of each corner (the middle of the 3 corner sc). Sl st to first sc. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Blocking
Soak the blanket in cool water with a small amount of mild wool wash or baby shampoo for 20 minutes. Gently squeeze out excess water (do not wring). Lay flat on blocking mats or a clean towel. Gently stretch to the finished dimensions (48" x 60"). Pin the edges, especially the corners, to ensure straight lines. Allow to dry completely (24–48 hours). This will even out stitches and set the texture.
Tips
- Color Carrying: When changing colors every 4 rows, do not cut the yarn unless you are switching to a color that won't be used again for several repeats. Instead, carry the unused color(s) loosely up the side. When you return to that color, simply pick it up again. This reduces ends to weave in and keeps the side edge neat. Every 10–12 rows, twist the carried yarn around the working yarn to keep tension even.
- Maintaining Even Edges: The first stitch of each row is worked into the first stitch (not into the turning chain). This prevents gaps and keeps the sides straight. If you find the edges curling, check that you are not skipping the first stitch. Also, ensure your chain-1 at the beginning of each row is not too tight.
- Customizing Size: To make a larger or smaller blanket, chain any multiple of 6 + 1. The repeat is very simple: the pattern is built on a 2-row repeat of a mesh row (ch 1, sk 1, sc in next) followed by a solid row (sc in each ch-1 sp and sc). The BLO and FLO variations create the diamond texture. You can also add more colors or use a gradient yarn for a different look.
