Free Crochet Pattern for a Beginner Lacy Blanket
Materials Needed
- Yarn: Approximately 900–1100 yards (823–1006 meters) of worsted weight (#4 Medium) cotton or cotton-blend yarn. For a solid color blanket, you will need roughly 3 skeins (each 350 yds/320 m). Sample uses Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in “Denim” (3 skeins) and “Natural” (1 skein for border).
- Crochet Hook: Size H/8 (5.0 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.
- Notions: Yarn needle, stitch markers (optional), scissors, tape measure.
- Finished Size: Approximately 36 inches (91 cm) wide x 42 inches (107 cm) long, including border.
Gauge
Using H/8 (5.0 mm) hook and worsted weight yarn, work the stitch pattern below in rows. 4 inches (10 cm) = 14 stitches and 10 rows in half double crochet (hdc). For the textured stripe pattern, gauge is similar but measure over the middle of the fabric, not including the chain spaces.

Pattern Instructions
Blanket Body (Make one rectangle)
Foundation: Ch 128 loosely (or any even number to desired width; gauge = 14 sts per 4″ so 128 sts ≈ 36.5″).
Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 3rd ch from hook (counts as first hdc). Hdc in each ch across. Turn. (126 hdc + turning ch = 127 sts total; the turning ch counts as a stitch throughout.)
Row 2 (WS): Ch 2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout), hdc in each st across. Turn. (127 sts)
Rows 3–6: Repeat Row 2. This creates a solid hdc base for the textured stripes.
Begin Textured Stripe Section (Rows 7–18):
- Row 7 (RS): Ch 2, hdc in next 4 sts, *fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st; rep from * across until 5 sts remain, hdc in last 5 sts. Turn.
- Row 8 (WS): Ch 2, hdc in next 4 sts, *bpdc around next st (the fpdc from previous row becomes a bpdc on WS), fpdc around next st; rep from * until 5 sts remain, hdc in last 5 sts. Turn.
- Row 9: Ch 2, hdc in next 4 sts, *bpdc around next st, fpdc around next st; rep from * until 5 sts remain, hdc in last 5 sts. Turn.
- Row 10: Ch 2, hdc in next 4 sts, *fpdc around next st, bpdc around next st; rep from * until 5 sts remain, hdc in last 5 sts. Turn.
- Rows 11–18: Repeat Rows 7–10 twice more. This creates a 12-row textured panel with alternating post stitches.
Return to Solid Hdc:
- Rows 19–24: Ch 2, hdc in each st across. Turn. (127 sts each row)
- Rows 25–36: Repeat the Textured Stripe Section (Rows 7–18) exactly.
- Rows 37–42: Hdc rows (solid).
- Rows 43–54: Repeat Textured Stripe Section (Rows 7–18).
- Rows 55–60: Hdc rows.
- Rows 61–72: Repeat Textured Stripe Section (Rows 7–18).
- Rows 73–78: Hdc rows.
Final solid rows: Repeat Row 2 (hdc) for 6 more rows, or until blanket measures 40 inches (102 cm) from start, ending with a WS row. Fasten off and weave in the yarn end.
Border
Round 1: With RS facing, join yarn with a sl st in any corner. Ch 1, work 3 sc in same corner. Work sc evenly along the first side (about 1 sc per row end, or 2 sc per hdc row and 1 sc per post stitch row). At the next corner, work 3 sc. Continue around all four sides, working 3 sc in each corner. When you reach the starting corner, sl st to first sc to join. Do not turn.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same st. *Sc in each sc until you reach the middle sc of the next corner (the center of the 3-sc group). In that corner st, work (sc, ch 2, sc). Rep from * around. Sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
Round 3 (optional edging): Join a contrasting color (e.g., Natural) in any corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as dc), work (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in same sp. *Skip next sc, sc in next 3 sc, skip next sc, work (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp. Rep from * around, adjusting stitch counts to keep corners neat. End with sl st to top of beginning ch-3. Fasten off.
Finishing
- Weave in all ends using a yarn needle. Make sure to weave into the back of the stitches for at least 2 inches, then trim excess. For color changes (if using border contrast), weave in ends securely so they do not show on the RS.
- Blocking: If using cotton yarn, gentle wet-blocking is recommended. Soak the blanket in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap for 15 minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Lay flat on a clean towel, roll to remove excess water, then lay flat on a blocking mat. Pin the edges to the finished measurements (36″ x 42″). Let dry completely. This evens out stitches and opens up the texture.
- Optional: If you prefer a stiffer fabric (for a dishcloth or placemat), skip blocking and simply steam lightly with an iron (no direct contact) to set stitches.
Tips
- Maintain consistent tension on post stitches: The fpdc and bpdc stitches can pull the fabric inward if worked too tightly. Keep your yarn tension relaxed, and if the fabric curls, add an extra hdc at the beginning and end of the textured rows (e.g., hdc in first 6 sts instead of 5) to compensate.
- Customize size easily: The pattern is based on multiples of 2 + 1 for the foundation chain. To make a larger blanket, add chains in groups of 2 (e.g., ch 130, 132, etc.) and work additional repeats of the 12-row textured stripe. For a smaller dishcloth, ch 40 and work only 2 textured stripes.
- Stitch markers for corners: When working the border, place a stitch marker in the middle sc of each corner 3-sc group. This makes it easy to find where to place the (sc, ch 2, sc) increase in Round 2, ensuring perfectly mitered corners every time.
